On Thursday, May 30, a man in Chicago shot a woman in the face because he thought she was someone trying to break into his house, according to the police. The woman was seriously hurt.
The 59-year-old guy thought someone was trying to break into his home on the 6700 block of South Prairie Avenue just before midnight, according to the Chicago Tribune and CBS News.
The man fired one shot and hit a 54-year-old woman on the right side of the face. The woman knew the guy.
She was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in very bad shape, and police found a gun at the scene of the crime. Based on CBS News, Area One Detectives were still looking into the case as of Friday. The news outlet did not say who the man or woman was.
When PEOPLE asked the Chicago Police Department for more information on Sunday, they didn’t answer right away.
The local PBS station WTTW said days before the shooting that the weekend of May 18–20 saw 31 different shootings in Chicago that injured 45 people and killed one. The numbers came from the Chicago Police Department.
Last Memorial Day weekend, the weekend before the accident, nine people were killed by gunfire and 41 people were shot in 30 different incidents, according to WTTW.
It was said that over 50 people were shot and 11 died in Chicago over Memorial Day weekend in 2023.
“There are some signs of improvement,” Mayor Brandon Johnson told reporters about shooting data recently. “But as long as there are deaths or shooting victims, no politician, and frankly, no Chicagoan, should celebrate.”
