President Joe Biden has emerged victorious in the New Hampshire primary, alleviating concerns among Democrats about waning enthusiasm for his campaign and his absence from the official ballot.
Fearing a potential embarrassing defeat, Biden supporters initiated an informal write-in campaign to encourage Democratic voters to express their support for the incumbent president at the polls.
Despite not being listed among the 21 candidates on the ballot due to New Hampshire’s deviation from the national Democratic Party’s primary calendar, the unofficial victory is seen as a symbolic affirmation of enthusiasm for Biden’s re-election.
However, the internal party conflict resulted in Biden not registering for the primary, rendering the results void of any nominating delegates.
The tension leading up to the contest reflected concerns that the president, already facing challenges in energizing the Democratic base, might struggle to garner sufficient support and face an unfavorable outcome.
Biden Backers Push Write-In Campaign in New Hampshire
As concerns escalated, advocates for President Biden initiated a write-in campaign targeting Democrats in the Granite State and “undeclared” independents who wished to participate in the Democratic primary.
Despite not personally campaigning in New Hampshire, Biden, along with Vice President Kamala Harris, hosted a rally for abortion rights in northern Virginia on Tuesday, marking the initial phase of their 2024 general election campaign.
The absence of Biden’s name from the ballot is a prominent consequence of his and the Democratic National Committee’s decision to prioritize South Carolina at the forefront of the primary calendar, recognizing its diversity and pivotal role in revitalizing Biden’s 2020 primary campaign.
Nevertheless, New Hampshire proceeded to schedule its primary ahead of South Carolina, in adherence to state laws, resulting in a standoff and prompting the DNC to dismiss the results as “meaningless” even before votes were cast.
The Biden campaign is closely monitoring the Trump-Haley race.
A decisive victory for Trump on Tuesday could potentially set the stage for a rematch of the previous presidential election.
While Haley has attempted to manage expectations among her supporters, a lackluster performance could signal the potential end of her campaign.
