Honduran illegal immigrants were linked to a third home break-in in Florida after DNA was found on a pair of sunglasses, police said.
Oscar Amaya-Guevara, 41, was linked to the theft after DNA was found on the shades. This connected him to the scene of an unsolved crime, according to the police.
The break-in that Amaya-Guevara did happened in late 2023. Two more happened in the same area after that, according to the police. He was already in the Martin County Jail when he was charged with one of the crimes. The sheriff’s office said he quickly became the main suspect in the other two unsolved cases.
Police say that in January, he broke into a house where a teenager was and threw her to the ground roughly. The girl talked to him about it and sent her father a live video of Amaya-Guevara.
Not long after that, he was caught. Once they had his DNA, they matched it to the pair of sunglasses in an open case.
In order to keep Oscar Amaya-Guevara in custody, U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement has sent a detainer request. This is a request for local officials to let federal immigration agents know when an illegal immigrant is going to be released from custody.
Agents will usually take the person into federal custody to start the process of removal.
“This case highlights the complexities of tracking not only traveling criminals from our region, but undocumented criminals who are much harder to locate,” the sheriff’s team said.
