In a span of three weeks, authorities in Michigan will disburse checks, averaging $550, to around 700,000 households, as a component of a recently enacted enhancement to the working families tax credit.
Qualified taxpayers in the state of Michigan will receive a check equivalent to the disparity between the 6% working families tax credit initially applied to an eligible resident’s 2022 tax refunds and the revised 30% value of the credit, which was implemented through legislation signed in 2023.
Stimulus Checks Schedule
The Michigan Department of Treasury has affirmed that eligible individuals in Michigan will automatically receive the payment, and no supplementary documentation is required.
The disbursement of the checks is scheduled to commence on February 13, with payments being distributed on a staggered basis over five to six weeks.
The state asserts that the aggregate value of the tax credit will result in an average tax refund of $3,150 for 700,000 families in the state for the tax year 2022.
Governor Whitmer on Michigan Tax Credit Expansion
In December, Governor Gretchen Whitmer, representing the Democratic Party in Michigan, commented on the enhanced tax credit, expressing, “By quintupling the working families tax credit, we’re placing an average of $550 back into the pockets of 700,000 Michigan families ahead of schedule.”
Governor Whitmer further emphasized the substantial impact of this measure, noting that it directly affects half of the children in Michigan.
She highlighted the flexibility afforded to parents in utilizing this supplementary funding during the tax season to address various financial obligations, cater to household needs, and acquire essential school supplies.
The governor’s remarks underscored the proactive approach taken to provide timely financial relief to Michigan families through the expanded working families tax credit initiative.
The augmented 30% rate for the working families tax credit will be incorporated into standard tax refunds, commencing with the tax year 2023.
