As a Winter Storm Warning blankets the Kansas City metro area, several school districts have opted to close on Tuesday, prioritizing the safety of students and staff amid severe weather conditions. The warning, effective until 6 p.m. on Tuesday, has prompted districts including Olathe, Shawnee Mission, Kansas City, Kansas, Blue Valley, and others to cancel classes.
David Smith of the Shawnee Mission School District shed light on the decision-making process, emphasizing the need to ensure safe facilities. “Cleaning sidewalks and removing ice to create a safe environment is crucial,” Smith explained. Additionally, assessing bus routes to guarantee safe transportation for students is a key factor in determining whether to cancel classes. The district monitors conditions throughout the day, especially with an eye on potential issues during the evening rush hour.
Smith stressed that the district’s priority is the safety of students during their commute. If conditions permit, schools aim to remain open, recognizing the role they play in providing education for students.
In contrast, the Kansas City and Park Hill school districts have opted for Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI) days, essentially transitioning to virtual school. Several schools in Kansas City, Missouri, including Kansas City Public Schools, Belton, Blue Springs, and Kearney, have decided to close on Tuesday.

Park University’s Kansas City area campuses will also be closed on Tuesday due to the inclement weather. Dr. Rochel Daniels, Superintendent of North Kansas City, revealed that their district will first use traditional snow days before resorting to AMI days, responding to parents’ feedback expressing a preference for traditional snow days.
Daniels highlighted their proactive approach to weather preparations, with crews salting parking lots and sidewalks around schools on Monday night. The decision to close schools anticipates the forecasted snowfall over the northern half of the KC metro, expected to be widespread on Tuesday.
According to Weather Team, strong gusts of wind with speeds ranging from 35 to 45 mph are expected on Tuesday, posing a significant challenge for drivers, particularly during the period from midnight to noon.
The Weather Team predicts a winter storm in the Kansas City metro, with expected snowfall ranging from 3-7 inches over a two-day period. However, counties located south of the metro may only experience a light dusting to 2 inches of snow.
As the winter storm unfolds, the coordinated response from school districts prioritizing safety and adapting to the challenges of virtual learning reflects a commitment to ensuring the well-being of students and staff during adverse weather conditions. The collaborative efforts of educators, administrators, and weather forecasters underscore the importance of preparedness and proactive decision-making in safeguarding communities during winter weather events.
