In a preemptive move to tackle the imminent arctic blast sweeping towards North Texas, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has initiated a comprehensive pretreatment strategy across the region. Focusing primarily on the Fort Worth District, TxDOT crews have taken an aggressive approach, coating highways and interstates with a brine solution to mitigate the impact of the approaching winter storm.
Val Lopez, spokesperson for TxDOT’s Fort Worth District, explained the significance of brine in winter weather management, stating, “Brine acts like an antifreeze. So when that winter precipitation falls on it – at that point, it dilutes with that brine and lowers that freezing temperature, and really creates a slush, which is much better than any sort of bonding ice on the roadway.”
This proactive measure is crucial, especially considering that the salt and water mixture can endure for about a week. With an eye on the impending wintry mix, TxDOT has opted for early intervention to ensure the safety of the roads. The Fort Worth District is tasked with preparing nearly 3,500 miles of main lanes in the Tarrant County area, with a particular emphasis on bridges and overpasses.
Lopez emphasized the vulnerability of bridges and overpasses, stating, “Those bridges and overpasses are simply exposed, they don’t have any insulation, so those tend to ice up first, and those are the ones we focus on in particular during pretreatment when we’re actively engaging in winter weather storm management.”

The pretreatment process is set to conclude shortly, with crews transitioning to round-the-clock operations before the anticipated cold snap hits North Texas on Sunday. Lopez confirmed the dedication of crews, stating, “We will have crews working in 12-hour shifts around the clock until things start to get better.”
Beyond the Fort Worth District, TxDOT’s Dallas District, covering seven counties on the east side of the metroplex, plans to commence road pretreatment on Friday morning. Crews are expected to complete the application of brine on all major roadways by Saturday.
Despite the proactive measures taken by TxDOT, officials are urging residents to exercise caution and stay off the roads if possible. Lopez acknowledged the challenges posed by the timing of the event, saying, “We realize this is happening during a holiday period, which hopefully means there will be less traffic on the highways.”
Emphasizing the preparedness of TxDOT for a potential multi-day event, Lopez reassured the public that the organization is well-equipped and well-stocked to handle the challenges that may arise. However, he reiterated the importance of collective responsibility, urging motorists to play their part in ensuring road safety.
As North Texas braces for the approaching arctic blast, TxDOT’s proactive measures underscore the commitment to safeguarding public safety and maintaining the integrity of the region’s roadways in the face of adverse weather conditions.
