Texas Nonprofit Aids Rural Communities in Accessing Federal and State Grants
In the vast expanse of rural Texas, where communities often grapple with the challenge of securing grants, Texas Rural Funders emerges as a beacon of support. Recognizing the uphill battle faced by rural city leaders in navigating the complexities of grant applications, the organization endeavors to demystify the process and bridge the gap between available grants and the communities that desperately need them.
Kelty Garbee, the visionary Executive Director of Texas Rural Funders, shared the organization’s mission, emphasizing the pivotal role of their grants fund and monthly newsletter. These resources serve as invaluable tools, alleviating the burden on community leaders by providing a roadmap to available grant opportunities. “What we are trying to do with our grants fund and our monthly newsletter gives people a resource that helps lift the burden of finding those grant opportunities,” Garbee explained.
The genesis of this nonprofit’s mission traces back to the realization that rural communities were often excluded from federal and state funds due to a lack of awareness and resources. Clifton Shaw, the Mayor of Slaton, a small rural community exemplifying this struggle, highlighted the absence of dedicated staff for filing applications. Larger cities like Lubbock might have personnel assigned to such tasks, but in places like Slaton, this is a luxury they cannot afford.

Apart from grappling with extensive paperwork, rural communities face the daunting task of identifying relevant grants and understanding the specific needs of their residents. Garbee stressed the importance of educating local leadership, emphasizing that informed leaders are essential for the prosperity of rural communities. “A lot of that is focusing on making sure rural communities know what they are eligible for, know what the opportunities are coming from the federal and the state government, and also that they participate in the processes,” Garbee affirmed.
Mayor Shaw echoed these sentiments, underlining the necessity of professionals who understand grant programs for sustaining growth in communities like Slaton. “You have to stay informed. In towns like ours, you have to have somebody who is familiar with the process and understands the process,” Shaw emphasized. “Because we don’t have the people, or truthfully, the education to navigate that stuff without professionals to help us with it.”
In the aftermath of the November election, a surge of grants tailored for rural communities became available. Texas Rural Funders is now poised to facilitate access to these funds, aiming to empower rural Texas with the financial resources necessary for growth and development.
