Scam Alert: $5,000 Jury Duty Scam Hits Texas Residents
In a recent incident, Lufkin officials have issued a community-wide alert after a woman was duped out of $5,000 in a fraudulent jury duty scam this Tuesday. The unsuspecting victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, received a call from a number with a 936 area code, purportedly alerting her about an impending warrant that required immediate payment.
According to city officials, the caller, posing as a law enforcement representative, insisted that the woman settle the warrant by paying a staggering $3,600 in Bitcoin. To add to the confusion, an additional $1,400 was demanded as a “first-time offender fee.” Unfortunately, the caller had obtained the woman’s personal information, which led her to believe the scam was genuine. Consequently, she sent a total of $5,000 to the fraudster.
Upon realizing the deception, the victim promptly contacted her bank to report the incident. Local law enforcement officials are urging residents to remain vigilant and take immediate action if they suspect they have fallen prey to a similar scam.
