As the Apple Vision Pro pre-order date approaches, we have gained insight into the mixed-reality headset. According to the official announcement, the device would ship with the M2 and R1 co-processors; however, Apple refrained from disclosing further details.
Fortunately, the most recent rumor suggests that the $3,499 device will use a more potent iteration of the M2, requiring improved graphics performance to operate the two 4K microLED screens.
Apple Unveils M2 Variants
A more powerful M2 with an 8-core processor and a 10-core graphics processing unit will power the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air.
Apple introduced two variants of the M2 with an 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU, in addition to a more expensive variant with a 10-core GPU. There was also a rumor that it would be equipped with a marginally more potent M2. This seems likely because it will cost $3,499; consequently, its internal components should be powered by the highest-quality silicon.
The 10-core GPU will offer a slight improvement in graphics performance, which is necessary for viewing fluid 4K content on the Apple Vision Pro’s high-resolution displays.
Additionally, it is probable that the R1 co-processor will alleviate a portion of the processing load from the M2, thereby allowing the chipset adequate flexibility to address more demanding tasks. In his most recent X post, Gurman also mentioned that Apple cardholders can pay in installments at the time of purchase.
Flexibility features, such as the option to pay in installments, should enable more customers to adopt the Apple Vision Pro as their daily driver. Given the financial impracticability of purchasing $3,499 simultaneously, Gurman’s assertion that Apple has adopted this strategy is plausible.
It is anticipated that pre-orders for the Apple Vision Pro will commence on January 19, and the mixed-reality headset will go on sale officially on February 2.
