Americans are leaving the country’s biggest cities because of inflation and rising home prices. A recent study found that wages have not kept up with rising home prices in more than half of the country’s biggest cities. As a result, many people can’t pay their mortgages.
Hence, it shouldn’t be a surprise that people are leaving cities in search of cheaper property, less crime, nature, and a lower cost of living in places such as Southern Appalachia.
A new poll by the moving and storage company Pods found that many of the top 20 most popular places to move in the United States are in two states: South Carolina and North Carolina. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Wilmington, North Carolina, tied for first place.
A lot of people also like the four-season weather, southern charm, history, and lively arts, culture, food, and wine scenes. The economy is also growing, especially in North Carolina, and tax rates are lower than in many other U.S. states, the company said.
People have long loved taking vacations in Myrtle Beach in the summer, but now more and more Americans are making it their permanent home because of how cheap the homes are there. In the same way, Wilmington has gone from being a vacation spot to one of the most popular places to live in North Carolina. It has a great mix of history, recreation, and good business chances.
The cost of living is lower than the national rate in both South Carolina and North Carolina, but the quality of life is not worse. Greenville, North Carolina, Charlotte, and Raleigh are also popular towns in these two states. All three were in the top 10 on Pods’ list.
The study also mentioned Tennessee and Georgia as places where many people are moving from states like California, Florida, and Texas because they want to live in a place with a mild climate, low costs of living, and lots of culture.
Pods’s data shows that the third most people who have moved out are from South Florida’s Miami metro area. This is after Los Angeles and San Francisco. People are leaving these cities because of higher crime and homelessness rates, as well as the high cost of living and renting rates.
Living in Florida is also losing its appeal because of the high costs of property, such as higher insurance rates and higher repair costs from climate change-related natural disasters. A new study found that Florida homes paid an average of $10,996 for insurance in 2023, which was more than $8,000 more than the national average.
