The Mayor of Minnesota Thanks President Biden for Canceling His Student Debt
On Wednesday, St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter was happy to say that his student loans were no longer a problem.
The mayor of Minnesota shared a picture of his Mohela account, which is the website he uses to keep track of and pay his student loans. His account showed a balance of $0.
What he wrote was “Thank you, Mr. President!”
Carter also used an X post from Pres. Biden’s account supported Biden’s choice to “relieve” student debt by going around a Supreme Court ruling.
“The Supreme Court tried to stop me from getting rid of student loans.” I didn’t let them stop me. I got rid of college loans for more than 5 million Americans. Biden wrote in his post, “I’m going to keep going.”
It came with a video of the president saying, “A lot of Black voters.” You can follow your dreams, have kids, buy your first home, start a business, and a lot more.
A website called GovSalaries.com says Carter made around $132,000 as mayor in 2021.
In 2023, the Supreme Court decided 6-3 that Biden’s secretary of education could not forgive more than $430 billion in student loan debt because it is against federal law to do so. At the time, Biden said that his government would keep working for his plan to help people with student loans.
He announced the Savings on Valuable Education (SAVE) plan in February. This plan will forgive student loan debt for registered borrowers who have been making payments for at least 10 years and have less than $12,000. People with bigger bills will get help after making payments for an extra year for every $1,000 they borrowed.
Biden has talked in public about getting around the Supreme Court’s decision more than once.
“Early in my term, I announced a major plan to provide millions of working families with debt relief for their college student debt,” he said. Tens of millions of people who were in debt were about to have their bills forgiven. But those of my MAGA Republican friends in Congress, in the legislature, and in special interests sued us. The Supreme Court stopped it. I didn’t let that stop me.”
