Columbus Mother Accused of Neglecting Her Son During a Medical Emergency Makes First Appearance
COLUMBUS, Ga. — The Columbus woman who is being charged with ignoring her child during a medical emergency went to court for the first time on Monday morning.
Emily Henry was taken into custody on May 31 for something that happened on May 3.
Police say Henry knew her 1-year-old son was sleepy, throwing up, and having seizures, but she is accused of not taking him to the hospital. In Atlanta, the boy was later found to have had two brain bleeds.
Henry’s first court appearance was Monday morning in front of Chief Judge David Ranieri.
The meeting was less than three minutes long, and Henry’s public defender, Sheneka Terry, pleaded not guilty at the start.
“She is going to enter a plea of not guilty at this time.” I talked to both the police and the state about this charge, and we agreed on a standard bond of $2,000. Terry told the judge, “We will not have a preliminary hearing. Instead, we want the case to go to Superior Court.” “I also know that the police want a statement that Ms. Henry must follow all DFCS [Georgia Department of Human Services Division of Family and Children Services] instructions, and she agrees with that, your honor.”
The child is with his biological grandparents, but Henry can visit with supervision.
Judge Ranieri sent the case to Superior Court, made Henry pay a regular bond of $2,500, and told her to follow all DFCS rules and instructions.
