A Georgia man has pleaded guilty to money laundering after he fraudulently obtained more than $2.6 million in Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Anthony J. Boncimino, 47, of Sycamore, Georgia, admitted that he knowingly created two fictitious companies to obtain PPP loans fraudulently and obtained PPP loans for his moving business by falsifying payroll information. In all, Boncimino collected $2,671,871.74 in four PPP loans from three lender banks using fraud.
Boncimino pleaded guilty to one count of money laundering before U.S. District Judge Louis Sands in Valdosta on November 8, 2021, and faces a maximum penalty of ten years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for February 24, 2022.
This case is a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in the distribution of government funds. The CARES Act was enacted to provide economic relief to individuals and businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the program has been plagued by fraud and abuse, with many individuals and businesses exploiting loopholes in the system to obtain funds fraudulently.

The case also highlights the need for stronger safeguards against fraud in government programs. The PPP program was designed to provide financial assistance to small businesses struggling during the pandemic. However, the program’s lax oversight and lack of transparency have made it vulnerable to fraud and abuse.
In conclusion, the guilty plea of Anthony J. Boncimino serves as a warning to those who seek to exploit government programs for personal gain. The government will continue to investigate and prosecute those who engage in fraudulent activities, and will work to ensure that taxpayer funds are used for their intended purposes.
