Gov. Murphy targets Texas gov, Congress over asylum seeker crisis in N.J.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has voiced his concerns over the recent influx of asylum seekers sent by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, characterizing it as a political stunt to navigate around New York City’s regulations. Since New Year’s Eve, approximately 1,000 asylum seekers have been transported by chartered buses to various New Jersey train stations.
Governor Murphy, in his first public statement on the matter, criticized Governor Abbott’s approach, stating, “The last thing we need is governors like Greg Abbott doing political stunts. This is not a time for stunts. This is a time to figure out a solution that’s broad and comprehensive.”
The drop-off points for these asylum seekers have included locations such as Secaucus, Fanwood, and Edison. Government sources disclosed that out of the 978 asylum seekers, over 700 made their way to New York City, while dozens opted to stay in New Jersey with family.
Governor Murphy, while acknowledging the situation as currently under control, emphasized the need for comprehensive immigration reform at the national level. He expressed frustration with Congress, stating, “America needs comprehensive immigration reform, period, and shame on Congress for not having solved this long ago.”

When questioned about New Jersey’s plan to address the situation, Governor Murphy asserted that New York City has the necessary federal resources and has been deemed a suitable location. However, community activists like Tony Agosto, based in Newark, raised concerns about the challenges faced by asylum seekers in adapting to the cold temperatures.
Agosto, a community activist associated with the Immaculate Heart of Mary church, highlighted the increased arrivals of asylum seekers even before the recent surge. “Getting them coats, getting them ready for the weather, getting them housing, food, medical attention. For most, it has been a struggle,” Agosto stated.
Governor Murphy assured that he is in constant communication with New York authorities to ensure the situation in New Jersey remains under control. While addressing the immediate needs of asylum seekers, the broader call remains for a comprehensive and national approach to immigration reform.
The influx of asylum seekers has prompted local communities and organizations to step up efforts to provide essential support, including shelter, food, medical care, and assistance in adapting to the colder climate. As the situation unfolds, the collaboration between states and local entities becomes crucial to managing the challenges posed by this sudden surge in arrivals.
