In the ever-evolving landscape of American migration patterns, United Van Lines has once again provided valuable insights into where and why people are choosing to relocate, shedding light on the trends that are shaping the nation’s demographic shifts.
United Van Lines, a prominent moving service company, recently unveiled findings from its annual National Movers Study, a comprehensive analysis based on the migration patterns of their customers. The study paints a picture of Americans gravitating toward eastbound and southbound destinations, seeking more affordable alternatives with comparable amenities to larger metropolitan areas.
According to the report, New Jersey stands out as a state experiencing a substantial outbound movement, with 65% of moves being outbound. This marks the sixth consecutive year that the Garden State has claimed the top spot on the list of states with the most residents moving away.
The primary reasons cited for outbound moves from New Jersey provide valuable insights into the motivations driving individuals and families to seek new horizons. Retirement emerged as a leading factor, accounting for 27% of outbound moves. Health considerations played a role for 4%, while family dynamics influenced 21.4% of moves. Lifestyle preferences, job opportunities, and the cost of living rounded out the list, with percentages of 14%, 16.40%, and 4.50%, respectively.

Eily Cummings, Vice President of Corporate Communications at United Van Lines, remarked on the broader trends observed in the study. “We are continuing to see the trend that Americans are moving to more affordable, lower-density areas across the country, with many heading to Southern states,” she noted. “Movers are also becoming more strategic with their planning, as relocation continues to be driven by factors such as the price of housing, regional climates, urban planning, and job growth.”
The outbound migration from New Jersey aligns with a national trend of individuals seeking affordability and comparable amenities in less densely populated regions. The top outbound states for 2023, according to the United Van Lines study, include Illinois (61%), North Dakota (61%), New York (60%), Michigan (58%), California (58%), Massachusetts (56.6%), and Kansas (55%).
To gain further insights into the relationship between these migration patterns and the current housing market, Zillow Senior Economist Orphe Divounguy conducted an analysis. The findings revealed that affordability is a pivotal consideration for both home buyers and sellers planning to relocate. The current housing market dynamics, as highlighted in the United Van Lines report, underscore the significance of economic factors in shaping migration trends.
