Authorities in Nebraska said Monday that a 74-year-old woman who was thought to have died while in hospice care was found to be alive after being taken to a funeral home.
Authorities in Lancaster County say the woman was taken from a nursing home, where she was pronounced dead at 9:44 a.m. local time, to the Butherus-Maser & Love Funeral Home in Lincoln on Monday morning.
At about 11:44 a.m., when an employee saw that the woman was alive, they “immediately called 911,” which is what Lancaster County Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said happened.
The woman, who police named as Constance Glantz of Lincoln, was given CPR at the funeral home and taken to a nearby hospital, where she is still alive, Houchin said. He said that her family had been told.
“This is a very unusual case,” Houchin told the press on Monday. “Been doing this 31 years and nothing like this has ever gotten to this point before.”
After the woman was pronounced dead, Houchin said, the nursing home did not need to call the coroner or the local police because the death was expected and there was nothing strange about it.
Houchin said that the sheriff’s office is looking into it but that no criminal charges are being considered at this time.
“We have not been able to find any criminal intent by the nursing home but the investigation is ongoing,” he said.
